Blocks , Blocks & blocks every where.  A house full of them, with printing beds, colours & fabrics. Meet Shyamala Rao a passionate  urban block printer narrates stories on blocks collected from all over India.

While talking about her impressive collection of hand carved wooden blocks she shares how she  designed & developed some  interesting blocks with the  artisans. With changing times how difficult it is  to find  authentic craftsmanship in the modern times….

Her enthusiasm does  not limit  to block printing….but many  antique collectibles  from India.

A lovely bubbly illustrator Pooja Vasu was eyeing on one of our  tv magnet for quite some time now. On a hot summery day i see her walking upto our new art & design studio now in mulund east, mumbai. A bit of brainstorming with pooja  took her to a lovely journey she had witnessed about matsya during her tenure at flying cursor a digital creative agency located  in bandra, mumbai. The illustration is a wild, fascinating  journey i experienced  & memories of my earlier work station in bandra. Sharing the office space with five companies, & the room with crazy mash guys, having all the possible fights &  fun is a reminder of all the lovely people i met during the natal stages of matsya. Picture bakhi hain means more yet to come it’s kinda of a pun used in hindi language…. I hope you enjoy the illustration as much as i do……

This was on my mind for quite some time to have an art & design studio. It’s up & ready to explore in mumbai, India. The idea is to get like minded people, artists, designers, travelers to use the studio in the most creative manner. One can come share music, travel stories, food recepies & peep into all that we do…..

We stopped, paused & unlearnt to take back an enriching experience.  We enjoyed the local food, folk music, people , amazed to see the artisans, crafts, costumes the landscapes,sunsets and the list could go on & on. We shopped like never before yes they were crazy travelers. They were wanderers, blogger’s photographers, who never wanted to come back. I look forward for more rural travelers to join us  for the next season’s craft tours. Till then stay connected …..

“ase vanota portugal”  mean’s we are going to portugal

A year ago Maria João Arnaud a graphic designer from Portugal  was seeking to learn Indian textile’s & she stumbled upon matsya. We dialogued, shared some common view’s  & quickly matsya  designed a  craft tour  keeping in mind maria’s  interest.

matsya introduced her to various craft’s, artisan’s, ngo’s who are engaged not only  in block printing & tye dye, but a varied of craft’s, culture & tradition’s of India. We had a extensive tour from Bhuj to Ahmedabad,Gujarat, India.

She learn’t, explored, experimented, had lot’s of fun,made new friend’s  & decided to take back the rich Indian textile’s of Kutch back to the  museum in Portugal. Further she  proposed  the museum to conduct  & organize  workshop’s for people in Portugal which would enable  the people an unique experience of Indian craft’s

Maria’s passion, dream turned to be a reality & when  the museum invited the Aurangzeb Khatri from Dhamdka, & Jabbar Bhai Khatri from bhuj, craft’s men from Kutch, Gujarat, India to portugal to demonstrate the fine process & also demonstrate through work shop’s.

we are  very happy for this lovely collaboration of art’s & crafts between India & Portugal &  look forward for more in the near future….

well we don’t have an offline store  at the moment, you can shop from our lovely online store matsyacrafts.com.…

we love to travel, meet people, experience different culture’s & do exhibition’s, display our handcrafted product’s to a few like minded store’s in & out of mumbai,  collaborate with existing  lovely online e-commerce portals such as shopo,unwrap,etc…. not to forget our first order was from facebook, followed by the blog & twitter!

yes very soon we are in the process of  having our own store:)

scouting for some lovely store space’s, garages, empty houses, in the right location’s in & out of mumbai, goa to display & bridge the gap of rural artisan’s, ngo’s shg’s, micro-enterprise’s who are engaged in making craft’s from rural India.

six month’s back  a mail popped in my inbox from “by hand from the heart” the name  amused me & soon i spoke   to deepa sekar the event organizer who with her tamil accent welcomed matsya to participate for their exhibition.

This was the first time matsya was going out of mumbai, a bit nervous, but everything fell in place through the support of  three women entrepreneurs Kshiti, Anjali & Deepa. Started preparing goodies for chennai!

The journey began in September, an overwhelming response from the people of Chennai, people poured in from all over & loved what we were doing & we sold off almost everything …..

The rich culture, tradition’s, & people of tamilnadu chennai touched my heart & i was determined to set up the matsya model in Chennai…The three consecutive exhibition’s resulted in strong relationships with people, store tie up’s & and some lovely collaboration’s to expand matsya not only in Chennai but entire south India.

It’s not only sales but building relationships through matsya . We are looking at more collaboration’s like these who can further implement matsya’s larger objective’s within their own cities, town’s thus empowering people who can then further empower hundred’s & thousand’s of people by providing sustainable livelihoods…

a new journey has begun stay connected we are soon coming up with very interesting project’s such as micro enterprises, craft tour’s in tamilnadu and many more adventure’s
